A 100-word story – Our exhibition stinks …

Processed by: Helicon Filter; The powerful aroma of beef doesn’t usually fill the Conservation Science Lab!  Today though, I am testing the chemicals in the scents that we would like to use to add atmosphere to a new exhibition. Mixed with the beef are smells of lavender, orange blossom and tallow, a rendered animal fat which was used for candles.  To test that they are safe to use I will expose very clean pieces of lead, silver and copper to the volatile chemicals in the perfumed vapours and, after a period of time, check them for corrosion. This will demonstrate whether they are safe to use near our delicate objects.  In the meantime, could someone open a window, please? Dr Ian Gibb, Conservation Scientist
